Tallinn’s first kata weekend signals a new era for Estonian judo

On the weekend of 21–22 February, Estonia quietly made judo history in Tallinn. The Estonian Judo Federation hosted its first-ever official kata seminar, turning a regular winter weekend into a real breakthrough moment for the country’s judo scene.

A new European kata hotspot is emerging in Tallinn.

The seminar was led by European Judo Union Kata Commission members Dr. Slaviša Bradić and Monica Piredda, both well-known kata specialists in Europe. They guided participants through the core structures of Nage-no-kata and Katame-no-kata, breaking down the techniques and explaining how kata supports both learning in the dojo and success in competition. A strong focus was placed on updated rules and judging criteria, giving Estonian judoka the tools they need to stand their ground internationally.

On the tatami, the group was impressively mixed: club coaches, Dan grade commission members, kata judges and a large number of young judoka shared the space. One moment stood out in particular when federation president Ruslan Jakimov joined the training in judogi, underlining that kata is not just a side project, but part of a long-term vision for the sport in Estonia. His presence added weight and motivation to an already intense atmosphere.

The weekend ended with a genuine landmark: the first Estonian National Kata Championship. Eleven pairs entered Nage-no-kata, and the technical level of the young competitors hinted at serious potential for the future. Many had discovered kata properly only during Saturday’s seminar and then decided to test themselves on Sunday, showing a rare mix of courage and curiosity.

One of the most telling details was how many first-time kata competitors also took part in the ne-waza event. It underlined that shiai and kata are not rivals but complementary paths within the same sport. For European judo, Estonia’s step is a strong reminder that a clear vision and good education can quickly change the landscape.

Estonia’s kata generation is ready to step onto the European stage.
