Sarah Menezes turns legacy into leadership for Brazil’s women

Sarah Menezes is still one of the names that defines Brazilian judo. Her Olympic title in London 2012 at -48 kg wasn’t just a personal peak: it made her the first Brazilian female judoka to win Olympic gold, a breakthrough that helped lift the whole profile of women’s judo in the country.
Her rise started long before that unforgettable day. Menezes, born in Piauí, announced herself as a major talent by taking junior world gold in Bangkok in 2008 and then defending the crown in Paris in 2009. Two junior world titles in a row set the tone: she wasn’t a one-tournament wonder.
At senior level, she backed it up with World Championships bronze medals in 2010, 2011 and 2013, keeping her place among the sport’s elite over multiple seasons. On the IJF World Tour she built a deep medal collection, winning the Grand Slam in Russia three times and adding the Grand Prix in Havana in 2016. Across her career, she picked up around 30 World Cup and World Tour medals, the kind of consistency that separates champions from flashes of form.
London 2012 remains a landmark moment for Brazilian women’s judo.
Menezes also navigated a set of defining rivalries. The record was often in her favour against Dayaris Mestre Alvarez, Paula Pareto, Alina Dumitru and Charline Van Snick, while matches against Japan’s Haruna Asami stood out as some of her toughest tests.
She represented Brazil at three Olympic Games: Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016. After more than 15 years on the national team, she stepped away from competition in 2020 after announcing her pregnancy. Her daughter Nina was born in May 2021, marking a clear shift from medal hunts to family life.
That didn’t mean leaving judo behind. In 2022, Menezes returned to the national programme as coach of the Brazilian women’s team, working through the Paris 2024 Olympic cycle alongside technical coordinator Andrea Berti. There’s also a European link close to home: her partner is French world champion Loïc Pietri.
The champion is now shaping what comes next.
