The European Judo Union Medical Seminar 2026 opened in Mechelen, Belgium, bringing medical specialists, researchers and Judo professionals together around athlete safety and education. The event took place on 16–17 October 2026 and was dedicated to scientific exchange on key health issues in modern Judo.
Organised in cooperation with Judo Belgium and Judo Vlaanderen, the seminar placed medical knowledge and inclusive participation at the heart of its programme. Delegates examined subjects that affect athletes, coaches and the wider Judo community.
Concussion and strangulation injuries were among the medical challenges on the agenda. The programme also covered anti-doping education, adapted Judo and the potential for Judo principles to contribute to public health.
Athlete safety and medical education were central to the two-day programme.
Dr Envic Galea, Chair of the EJU Medical Commission, opened the seminar by welcoming the delegates. He also thanked Professor Dr Peter Vermeir, President of the Belgian Judo Federation, for the hospitality and organisation surrounding the event.
Dr Peter Smoulders, head of the EJU Medical Commission, introduced the scientific programme. His presentation set the stage for discussions involving specialists and Judo professionals from across the European Judo community.
The seminar in the historic city of Mechelen highlighted the range of medical questions connected to the sport. From injury awareness to inclusion and anti-doping education, its focus was firmly on supporting safer, better-informed participation in Judo.
