Podgorica’s next big test: Junior Europeans 2026 are taking shape

Momentum is growing in Podgorica as the city pushes deeper into preparations for the Junior European Judo Championships 2026, scheduled for September. After hosting a successful Senior European Judo Championships last year, the Montenegrin capital is stepping back into the EJU spotlight—this time with the focus locked on the next wave of European talent.

A familiar host is aiming for a higher standard.

A key checkpoint came with a visit from EJU Head Sport Director Urška Žolnir Jugovar, who travelled to Podgorica together with Janity Tibor, the EJU Head of Event Management and Broadcasting. Their on-site inspection reviewed the progress across the event set-up, and the overall message from the EJU side was encouraging.

The organising structure remains built on experience. The same team is in place, led by President Jovica Račević, and the intention is clear: don’t just reproduce last year’s success—raise the level. According to the report, planning is being approached with careful attention, with every operational detail weighed against what’s expected on a European stage.

From venue readiness to logistics, the organisers showed professionalism and commitment during the visit. Žolnir Jugovar highlighted that the work is being done on a strong foundation and said the preparation and dedication seen in Podgorica gives confidence looking ahead to September.

This championship is a launchpad, not just a tournament.

For junior athletes, the stakes are emotional as well as competitive. The Junior European Championships can be the first major step into the wider European scene—a place where reputations begin, and future champions often get their earliest real spotlight.
