Pirbus-Grof’s Breakthrough Sends the Cadet -40 kg Final in a New Direction

Nora Pirbus-Grof changed the story of the -40 kg division on the opening day of the Millennium Team Cadet European Judo Championships 2026. In a category packed with 14 young judoka chasing a place on the European podium, the Hungarian produced the key result by stopping top seed Sofiia Palamarenko of Ukraine and moving into the final.

The day began with clear pressure around the favourite. Palamarenko looked strong from the start and fought her way confidently into the semi-finals, carrying the expectations that come with the number one position. In cadet judo, that kind of status can shape the whole draw, but it also paints a target on your back.

That is where Pirbus-Grof stepped in.

Ranked 19th in the cadet world rankings, the Hungarian arrived without the spotlight that followed the top seed. Still, her semi-final performance showed sharp timing and real composure when it mattered most. By defeating Palamarenko, she not only ended the run of the favourite but also secured her own place in the continental final.

For Pirbus-Grof, the result carries extra weight. She had not stood on a European Cup podium since taking bronze in Győr in 2025, the same venue where she won gold the year before. That gap made this run feel especially important, and on the European Championship stage she found her moment again.

One upset was enough to reshape the whole -40 kg bracket.

The -40 kg category opened the championships with exactly the kind of intensity expected from cadet competition. Every athlete stepped onto the tatami with the same goal, but by the end of the day only four would leave with a place on the podium. Pirbus-Grof made sure she was one of them, and she did it by taking out the biggest name left in her half of the draw.

There is always something gripping about an unheralded run in championship judo, especially at cadet level where momentum can change fast and confidence can grow match by match. Pirbus-Grof’s result was not just about reaching a medal contest. It was about turning a difficult recent stretch into a breakthrough on one of the most important stages available to her age group.

With the final now ahead, the Hungarian has already delivered one of the standout moments from the first day in the -40 kg category. Sometimes a tournament begins with the favourite in control. Then one contest shifts everything.
