Mariani’s Olympic Legacy Earns a New IJF Role

Italian Judo pioneer Felice Mariani has been appointed an IJF Ambassador, adding another landmark to a career that has shaped the sport both on and off the tatami. IJF President Marius Vizer presented Mariani with the ambassador diploma at the IJF Gala in Baku, held alongside the 2026 World Judo Championships.
For Italian Judo, Mariani’s competitive record carries special weight. At the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games, he won bronze to become the first Italian judoka to earn an Olympic medal. He also collected three world championship bronze medals during his time as an athlete.
His influence did not end when competition did. Mariani later coached the Italian national team and helped guide Giulia Quintavalle to Olympic gold at the Beijing 2008 Games. The ambassador appointment recognises that long connection to Judo: as a competitor, coach and continuing promoter of the sport.
Mariani’s journey in Judo now includes a new international honour.
Mariani described the appointment as a great satisfaction and thanked President Vizer for the opportunity. He said being included among distinguished figures from sport and public life made the day especially meaningful, calling it a moment he would remember.
The gala also featured a performance by Italian singer Al Bano. Mariani said the appearance made the occasion even more special, praising the singer for bringing Italy and the Italian language to an international setting.
The IJF’s decision places fresh recognition on an Italian career defined by historic Olympic success, world-level medals and a later contribution to the next generation of judoka.
