Riga kicked off the Veterans European Tour 2026 with a compact but powerful opening event. Judoka from 16 nations gathered in the Latvian capital, bringing together sharp competition and a relaxed, friendly vibe. The entry numbers were not the highest, but the quality on the tatami showed that this tour is all about skill, experience and genuine love for judo.
In Riga, the veterans proved that fighting spirit and friendship can share the same tatami.
Throughout the day, respect was the clear common language. After intense contests, athletes exchanged handshakes, smiles and quiet nods of recognition. The veterans managed to push each other hard while still protecting the spirit of fair play, showing younger generations what long-term commitment to the sport can look like.
Host nation Latvia produced the headline performance and owned the medal table. Home favourites took multiple titles, with gold medals for Martins Plesums (M2 -73kg), Andrejs Buivids (M5 -81kg), Andris Palamarčuks (M5 +100kg), Adzir Mamedau (M7 -81kg) and Aleksandrs Zubcenko (M8 -66kg). On top of that, Latvian judoka added ten silver and one bronze medal, underlining how strong and deep veteran judo has become in the country.
Ukraine delivered another big European result, finishing second in the overall standings with five gold, two silver and four bronze medals. Belgium also showed its class with three golds and third place on the table. In total, 15 nations left Riga with at least one medal, proof of a broad and competitive field.
Once again, Riga confirmed its reputation as a welcoming, well-run host city for international judo events. Organisation, atmosphere and support for the athletes all came together to create a memorable start to the season. For the Latvian capital, this is only the first chapter of what promises to be a packed judo year.
