Judo Education Project Takes Its Next Steps in Portugal

The Erasmus+ SoftPath project has moved closer to completion after its partners met in Portugal in mid-October. Hosted by Sport Evolution Alliance, the final meeting gave the group time to assess progress, review achievements and coordinate the work still to be completed.
SoftPath is focused on bringing Judo into primary school settings across Europe. Its aim is to make the sport more accessible for children aged 6–12 while using Judo to support physical development, respect, cooperation and self-discipline.
The project responds to a clear challenge. Although Judo has recognised educational benefits, structured Judo programmes are still limited in many primary schools. Physical education lessons often centre on traditional team sports, while teachers may not have the training, confidence or resources to introduce Judo safely.
Misunderstandings about martial arts can also make schools and parents hesitant. SoftPath seeks to tackle those barriers through the Integrated Values-Based Sport Education model, known as IVSE. This approach combines physical education with social-emotional learning and closer cooperation between schools and local sports clubs.
A central part of the project is giving teachers practical tools and knowledge that can help them deliver Judo lessons independently. That could make it easier for schools to introduce the sport in a structured way, rather than relying only on outside specialists.
SoftPath connects Judo skills with respect, cooperation and self-discipline.
The partnership with local Judo clubs is another important element. Children who first encounter Judo at school may then have a route to continue training within their own communities.
As the Erasmus+ initiative enters its final stage, SoftPath is aiming for an impact that lasts beyond the project itself. The wider goal is simple but meaningful: open more school doors to Judo and highlight the values the sport can offer beyond the tatami.
