British Judo turns Walsall campus into free strength lab for combat sports

British Judo is once again opening its home base to everyone who wants to push combat sport performance to the next level. On Sunday, 14 March 2026, the University of Wolverhampton’s Walsall Campus will host the 4th Combat Sport Workshop, fully dedicated to strength and conditioning.

One full day of free high-performance input for combat sport coaches.

The event runs from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm and targets coaches and practitioners working in judo and other combat sports. Participants are invited to join on site, learn from leading experts in applied sport science and experience hands-on sessions that translate directly to the tatami and the gym. The focus lies on how modern strength and conditioning concepts can support real fight performance.

Alongside practical workshops, the day is designed as a networking hub. Coaches, performance staff and practitioners can connect with researchers who are working on the latest developments in sport science, exchange ideas on long-term athlete development and discuss how to structure smarter training loads. This mix of science and day-to-day coaching reality has made the format an important date on the British judo calendar.

The workshop is completely free, but places are limited, so early registration is essential. To secure a spot, interested participants should email Associate Professor of Sport and Exercise Science, Ross Cloak, who coordinates the event. Over the years, the workshop has grown into a genuine platform for collaboration between coaches, researchers and practitioners and continues to strengthen the link between British Judo and the wider European combat sport community.

For European judo coaches, this is a rare chance to tap into British Judo’s training environment, share experiences and bring fresh ideas back to their own clubs and national teams.
